In essence, becoming a successful Maths teacher is a journey that involves continuous learning, adapting to new challenges, and finding creative ways to inspire a love of maths in young learners.
After finishing my Double Masters and Bachelor of Education in Mathematics, I started my teaching career in 2003. Early in my career, I'd be anxious reviewing tomorrow's lessons—worried about how best to reach each student.
That quiet anxiety pushed me to seek out new engaging methods—real-life examples, using concrete resources such as manipulatives, and engaging explanations that would stick. That insight changed everything. I realised that Maths could be a subject of curiosity, patterns, and discovery—much more than rote memorisation.
With more than 20 years of experience, I bring that hands-on, visual spirit into every lesson—because when a child moves a piece, draws a picture, or acts out a problem, that's when maths stops being abstract and starts feeling real.
Today, I tutor because I want every child to experience that moment of clarity—the flicker in their eyes when a concept suddenly makes sense. I believe that with the right environment—one of empathy, exploration, and encouragement—every student can overcome maths anxiety and grow in confidence.
